A Key Time Management Strategy - Think 1%

The 1% Rule and Habits
Can one tip matter?
The Power of One Mindset – The 1% Rule

Did you know that you only have to improve by 1% a day to increase your effectiveness in 70 days!

That’s what makes the power-tip concept so valuable …one tip applied could equal that 1% and THAT could change your life?

How? One tip could represent changing one behavior.  One behavior could greatly impact an outcome in your life.

Here’s an example.  Let’s say that you’d like to improve the relationship with your significant other or even your boss (which I guess is a “significant other” in a different kind of way), and you receive a communication tip that teaches you how to listen more effectively. When applied, effective listening will improve that relationship significantly because the person will feel heard….and the number one psychological need a person has is to be heard.

That’s one tip – one tip applied = significant improvement... see what I mean?
The key - it's just a little something over a period of time that turns into a significant something.  1% is very small! …now that’s the power of one!

Consider as you work through the power tips offered in this handbook,  what  ONE thing, action, behavior, thought process, you could focus on to make this a reality in your life?

2 Must Have Time Management Skills

Are you efficient  & effective?....there is a difference...

Are you in the habit of getting things done and getting the right things done at the right time? One of the marks of an effective professional is exactly that:  the ability to get things done at the right time and in an efficient way - eh hem...meeting deadlines.

Several years ago, USA Today surveyed several freshman senators and house members to find out what piece of advice they would give incoming colleagues.  Interestingly, over half of those whose advice was noted addressed the issue of time management and scheduling.

In working with time management, here are two important elements to consider – efficient and effective.

 In fact…
1. You can be efficient and not necessarily be effective.

2. Effective is getting the right things done at the right time.  For example, you can get a lot done in a week and still have critical activity fall through the cracks.

3. Being effective means one has to take the time to PLAN and determine what’s most important what’s critical or ABSOLUTE.

The conclusion?...they are equally important. So, an important professional success strategy is to be known as someone who gets things done and being efficient at doing so.

If you need help in either of these areas, then you'll want to pick up the title Organizational Strategies for the Overwhelmed - how to manage your time, space, & priorities, to work smart, get results & be happy -  Kindle - The Book - Nook - Audio Book -  The Seminar

Time Management Tip #3

ReTweet Me

3. Be in the habit of planning your week
This is a great habit and time management strategy. It’s best to determine a time in which you can do it consistently.  For me it’s Monday first thing, for other’s it’ll be Thursday or Friday the week before.  You’ll get into your own rhythm and time slot.

Do you believe that planning your week can get you better results?  Please know that when I suggest this, it's with the knowledge the most people do not have complete control of their time.

However, planning is like creating a map - you're more likely to get your destination with a map than without.

The easier way to do this is with a "week-at-a-glance", mapping what you want to do when in light of other items on your schedule (ie. conference calls, appts., etc).

Habits - Part 2

Fitness4ward
So ask yourself, "what new habits do I want to create to manage my time and life better?" Be specific and clear in exactly the behavior or thought you want it to be.

We do have habits of thought and habits of behavior and both are important to develop.

Also, recognize that a habit takes at least 21-30 days to create (and I say 45 for grace.) That’s the shortest period only if you are consistent in the attempt.  It will take longer if you are not.

Remember, a true habit is one in which the behavior is done automatically without even having to think about it.

"Habits are the routines that are the building blocks of your life."

Habit – Your Constant Companion

“I am your constant companion; I am your greatest helper or your heaviest burden.  I will push you onward or drag you down to failure.  I’m completely at your command.

Half the things you do you might just as well turn over to me and I will be able to do them quickly and correctly.  I am easily managed.  You must merely be firm with me.

Show me exactly how you want something done and after a few lessons I will do it automatically. I am the servant of all great men and alas of all failures as well. Those who are great, I have made great.  Those of you who are failures, I have made failures.

I am not a machine although I work with all the precision of a machine plus the intelligence of a man.  You may run me for profit or run me for ruin.  It makes no difference to me.  Take me, train me, be firm with me and I’ll put the world at your feet.  Be easy with me and I will destroy you.  Who am I?  I am HABIT!”
